Steven Gordon Halseth, 55, of Yakima passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Steve was born January 5, 1949 to Gordon A. and Marjorie M. (Skogmo) Halseth. He was raised in Richland and was active in sports, hunting and fishing. He attended Chief Jo Junior High School and graduated with the Class of 1967 from Richland's Columbia High School.

He pursued an education career and enjoyed teaching in Wapato, Union Gap and Davis High School, retiring in 2002. One of the things he loved most in life was coaching. He coached fast pitch, volleyball, basketball and bowling. Among his favorites were coaching Roy Farms softball team and little kids tract for East Valley.

Steve married Lila Rae Burns on September 4, 1969 and raised their three children in East Valley. He was part of a very close, caring and supportive community. Steve took an active role in educational decisions, always putting children first.

The Halseth family's passions included time spent at their vacation home in Westport. Steve loved all maritime activities, among his favorite were clamming and crabbing off the Golden Eagle.

Steve was an avid reader, loved history and had an incredible skill of absorbing knowledge (Steve always had an answer, and it was usually the right one). Many people will continue to cherish the special projects that he spent hours creating with his woodworking and craftsmanship skills.

Steve and Lila loved entertaining family and friends. The door was always open whether it was one person passing through town or a large group.

Everyone felt welcome and enjoyed a warm and friendly experience. Steve was in his glory while in the kitchen preparing one of his magnificent meals.

One of Steve's greatest gifts was his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Lila Halseth of Yakima; three children: Glenn and wife Lisa Halseth of Redmond, Heather and husband Seth Taylor of Gig Harbor, and Chip Halseth of Seattle; four grandchildren: Keaton Taylor, Skyler Taylor, Garrett Halseth and Emma Halseth; his father, Gordon Halseth of Richland; and his brother and sister-in-law, Greg ('71) and Mary Halseth of Woodinville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Halseth.

"Steve, you weren't just a 'good guy', you were a GREAT GUY! We were honored to have known you."

Memorial services were held at 11AM on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Terrace Heights Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Seattle Cancer Clinic Alliance, c/o Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home at 1010 W. Yakima Avenue, Yakima, WA 98902.
